Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS)
One of the most mysterious (and most dramatic) degenerative diseases which affects 7 to 8 people out of 100,000 worldwide. The WHO predicts a 160% increase by 2050. There are nearly 120,000 new cases of ALS diagnosed each year worldwide. The genetic origin of this neurological disease would be probable.
ALS is caused by the deterioration of the motor neurons which control voluntary muscles. The condition is characterized:
- anatomically by the degeneration of the pyramidal fasciculus and the atrophy of the large motor cells of the anterior horns of the gray matter of the spinal cord and the cells of the brain stem
- clinically by the coexistence of phenomena of spasmodic paralysis and progressive muscular atrophy.
Major risk factors: exposure to pesticides, significant physical trauma, exposure to heavy metals, smoking, high-fat diet...
Note: the disease is known in France under the name "Charcot disease". In North America, it is called "Lou Gehrig's disease".
