Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
The carpal tunnel (or canal) is a small opening under the surface of the wrist, through which the median nerve passes. When the latter is compressed or damaged, various symptoms appear: tingling, numbness of the first 3 fingers, atrophy of the muscles of the thenar eminence, atrophy of the thumb musculature.
The causes can be varied: fracture, Paget's disease, tendinitis, inflammatory arthritis, hypothyroidism.
Various people are particularly predisposed: hairdressers, musicians, writers, people who knit or crochet a lot, use computer keyboards or jackhammers…
