Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS)
Also called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
Compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel (palmar side): characterized by tingling, numbness and hyposthesia of the first 3 fingers, atrophy of the muscles of the thenar eminence with difficulty in movements of the fingers and thumb (feeling of paralysis)
Symptoms: numbness or tingling in the hands and fingers, loss of muscle tone in the fingers, pain in the wrist and palm which sometimes radiates to the forearm and even to the shoulder. Pain and numbness may intensify during the night.
Possible causes: injury to the wrist by fracture, acromegaly (hypertrophy of the ends of the bones), Paget's disease (osteitis deformans), tenosynovitis (simultaneous inflammation of a tendon and the synovial sheath that surrounds it)
People at risk: People who perform movements repetitive strain on the shoulders, elbows and wrists (e.g.: assembly line, computer, etc.), pregnant women, overweight people, diabetics.
