Chikungunya
A black mosquito, streaked with white (especially Ædes ægypti or Æ. albopictus) would be the vector of transmission of the infection. This disease usually causes fever and arthritic joint pain. The risk of contagion is higher during the day, particularly at sunrise and sunset, but the mosquitoes that transmit chikungunya can bite even in shady places.
Symptoms appear between 3 and 7 days after infection: fever, joint pain, fatigue, headache, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, rash (resembling that of measles). Complications are rare but can nevertheless appear in more fragile people (infants, elderly people or those suffering from a chronic illness). We then notice gastrointestinal (diarrhea), ocular, neurological or cardiac disorders.
Chikungunya was first described in 1952 in Tanzania.
