Cholera

Infectious diarrheal intestinal disease of epidemic nature (diarrhea generally having the appearance of rice water), caused by the bacteria Vibrio cholera or bacillus comma, discovered by Pacini in 1854 (a bacteria close cousin of the bacteria causing gastroenteritis).

The disease is spread by ingestion of water and food contaminated.

Symptoms: They appear after 1 to 5 days: mild or moderate watery diarrhea, with or without vomiting, dehydration, kidney failure.

Symptoms of advanced cholera: muscle cramps, reduced or absent urination, severe weakness, thready pulse, wrinkled skin of the fingers... coma, then death.

4 to 5 million cases each year worldwide and more than 100,000 deaths (WHO estimates - 2011). People with weak immunity, malnourished children are at greater risk of death if infected.
