Chronic Appendicitis

Inflammation of the vermiform appendix of the cecum which manifests itself as sharp pain at the Mac Burney point.

A poorly treated appendicitis or detected too late can degenerate into peritonitis.

The peak frequency of appendicitis is between 15 and 30 years of age, although the appendicitis attack can be seen at any age.

The appendix has been considered for a long time as... a simple vestige of our evolution. For several years, American researchers have claimed that the appendix serves as a reservoir of protective bacteria. It participates in the production of immune cells.

Formerly considered a surgical emergency, appendicitis surgery is performed less and less in France (300,000 operations in 1990, 83,000 in 2010).
