Concussion
- A concussion is a set of reactions that occur in the brain. A shock following an impact to the head, face or neck, following a fall, an automobile accident or a blow received during a sporting event.
- A mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a set of cerebral reactions caused by traumatic biomechanical forces.
The signs and symptoms can appear immediately after an impact: violent contact with an object or a stationary surface (goal post, etc.) or a moving object (a person's head, ball, rattle, etc.).
The brain is then shaken between the rigid walls of the skull, which causes damage to the brain cells. The soft tissues of the brain can move inside the skull and bump against hard bones, which can cause blood vessels to rupture and some damage to nerve cells. Loss of consciousness can last from a few seconds to several minutes.
These disorders are accompanied by headaches, confusion and memory problems. Dizziness, nausea and vomiting, amnesia, ringing in the ears, slurred speech may occur, signs of hypoglycemia may occur.
