Tissue mortification, followed or not by infection.
Gangrene is distinguished:
- <b>white</b> in which the mortified plaque is milky white,
- <b>humid</b> in which putrefaction phenomena dominate,
- <b>dry</b> (or sphacele) in which the tissues are black, dried out
