Herniated Disc

Abnormal protrusion of the intervertebral disc into the spinal canal, due to the expulsion, backwards, following trauma, of the nucleaus pulposus. This herniation most often occurs on the L4-L5 or L5-S1 discs. It causes compression of the sciatic roots and persistent neuralgia.

The causes are multiple:

  • degeneration of the intervertebral discs with age,
  • poor posture such as lifting heavy loads in a twisted trunk position,
  • excess weight,
  • hereditary predisposition.

Hernia causes lower back pain: low back pain. If the hernia compresses one of the roots of the sciatic nerve: this is sciatica.
