Metabolic Syndrome
Insidious disease first called syndrome X then metabolic syndrome. This is a constellation of risk factors associating to varying degrees lipid abnormalities (low HDL and high triglycerides), high blood pressure, glucose intolerance (blood sugar on an empty stomach greater than 1.10 g/L) and a high waist circumference reflecting abdominal obesity. Syndrome discovered in the 1950s by Prof. Jean Vague. The syndrome has 2 harmful consequences: the risk of cardiovascular accident and exposure to diabetes.
Clinical signs: HDL cholesterol (good cholesterol) less than 0.40 g/l for men and 0.50 g/l for women - Triglyceride level greater than 1.5 g/L- Decrease in HDL - Waist circumference greater than 90 cm for men and 78 cm for women - Blood sugar on an empty stomach greater than 1 g/L or proven type II diabetes - blood pressure greater than 130/85 mm Hg.
These signs are warning signs of serious cardiovascular diseases - Screening: measuring waist circumference and triglyceride levels.
Metabolic syndrome is partly of genetic origin, partly environmental.
