Pregnancy Diabetes

Pregnancy diabetes affects 6 to 8% of pregnant women and most often appears towards the end of the 2th or during the 3th trimester of pregnancy.

During pregnancy, a temporary disturbance may appear: the placenta produces hormones which reduce the action of insulin, the hormone used to reduce blood sugar levels. In some cases, the body fails to produce more insulin to restore balance. This is gestational diabetes.

Symptoms: unusual fatigue, excessive thirst, frequent urge to urinate…

We may also notice a urinary tract infection, excess amniotic fluid, hypertension and general or localized body swelling.

Gestational diabetes can predispose to developing type II diabetes in the years that follow.
