Pulmonary Emphysema
Increase in volume of the pulmonary alveoli with destruction of the alveolar wall and loss of elasticity, which makes it impossible for the alveoli to completely empty themselves of the air contained during expiration and makes gas exchanges (oxygen and carbon dioxide) difficult.
Emphysema is a complication of chronic bronchitis which manifests itself by destruction of the pulmonary bronchioles.
Note: Emphysema and chronic bronchitis (see fact sheet) form a group of respiratory diseases called: chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases (COPD); the entire respiratory function is affected.
