Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS)

Disorder that manifests itself by tingling, frequent involuntary jerks, tingling, burning sensations, itching or heavy pain in the legs, an irresistible urge to move the lower limbs.

Manifestations are common on the calves, thighs, ankles and sometimes the arms. They occur in the evening or at night, in a lying or sitting position and are only calmed by walking or continuous movements.

We give various names to this pathology: impatience, restless merasthenia, nocturnal restless paresthesia of the lower limbs, Ekbom syndrome (Karl Ekbom, Swedish neurologist, defined it in 1945).

A disorder of dopamine metabolism (substance produced by the brain) is often involved. This disturbance can appear following an emotional shock, following the taking of neuroleptic medications or after the consumption of lithium.

“Impatience” is often accompanied by a deficiency of cerebral iron (ferritin), insomnia and daytime drowsiness. This disorder affects 3% of people under 30, 10% from 30 to 80, and 19% of people over 80.
