Rieter Syndrome

Also called “Oculu-Urethro-Synovial syndrome” (OUS) or reactive arthritis, it is a systemic disease which sometimes accompanies ankylosing spondylitis.

It is characterized by the simultaneous appearance of fever, inflammation of the urethra (urethritis), joints (low back pain), in particular difficulty urinating or infection (cervicitis, salpingitis), joint pain and conjunctivitis (red, itchy eyes).

It is one of the seronegative spondyloarthropathies. It seems due to an inflammatory attack (in the eye, genitourinary organs, joints [Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis] or intestines), a reaction to a bacterial infection.

It is more widespread in men than in women. The most common cause appears to be the presence in the joint (and other organs) of Chlamydia trachomatis, originating from a genital infection.
