Sleep Apnea
Serious condition that causes repeated “breathing pauses” during sleep. These pauses (or apneas) usually last 15 to 30 seconds and can occur several times during the night. The most common form of apnea is obstructive sleep apnea, which is characterized by blockage of the upper airways during sleep. Excess fatty tissue in the throat can block the passage of air.
Untreated, apnea can cause serious health problems: arrhythmia, hypertension, stroke, heart attack, feeling of suffocation during the night, headaches upon waking up, drowsiness during the day, memory problems, depression, reduced sexual function.
Conditions at risk: smoking, alcoholism, excess weight, large neck, large tongue, narrow airways, use of sedative medications
