Uremia
Uraemia: serious pathological increase in the level of urea in the blood (hyperazotaemia) accompanied by water retention, edema, hypertension and indicating progressive chronic renal failure
This disease can affect many systems: the nervous system (convulsion, comatose state), the digestive system (vomiting, diarrhea), the respiratory system (dyspnea, difficult breathing). When the solutions proposed are not sufficient, dialysis is practiced: a machine which replaces the kidneys, 3 times a week for several hours, to filter the blood and remove impurities.
It is necessary to distinguish:
• urea: final product of protein degradation by the liver and excreted by the kidneys,
• uric acid: terminal element in the catabolism of purines and nucleic acids. Its accumulation in tissues and biological fluids is observed in joint gout.
