Fevers
Elevation of body temperature above normal, accompanied by general malaise and various symptoms.
Normals: 37° C in the morning - 37.5° C in the evening around 5 p.m., at rest
Fever constitutes the most powerful healing process with which nature has endowed living organisms. It is therefore a question of not thwarting this process but of controlling it so that the situation is “tolerable” for the patient.
“39.5° C... fever does indeed have its uses. A team of researchers from Buffalo in the USA has shown that it accelerates the immune reaction. The temperature seems to have an effect on the vessel cells. The latter produce adherent molecules which allow them to grip circulating white blood cells, the lymphocytes. They are then directed towards the lymph nodes, where the immune system locates the appropriate globules to fight a microbe. In the case of a fever of 39.5° C, there are twice as many lymphocytes reaching the nodes as usual.”
