Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD)
When the sun is less present and the days are shorter, some people who have a sensitive nervous or hormonal system experience a state of depression which only ends with the beautiful days of spring. Light plays a role in the resynchronization of the different circadian elements which act on the sleep/wake rhythm.
Main signs: intense fatigue, difficulty getting up in the morning, increased need for sleep, increased appetite with irresistible cravings for sweet and starchy foods, reduced libido, loss of interest in usual activities, desire to isolate... these symptoms make people unable to function normally.
5% of the population suffers from seasonal depression (another name for SAD), 80% of those affected are women aged 18 to 55.
