Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Aging of the macule, an area located in the center of the retina and responsible for visual acuity. There is a proliferation of abnormal blood vessels (new vessels). Macular degeneration can occur from the age of 50-60 and take different forms, depending on its development:

  • dry form (the most common): formation of small yellow deposits in the vessels, which leads to degeneration of the photoreceptors of the macule,
  • wet form: abnormal growth, under the retina, of blood vessels (neovessels) from which blood and fluids escape which damage the macule.

The degradation of the macule generally appears more significant after the age of 70.
