Celiac Disease
Disease of the mucosa of the small intestine, linked to intolerance to gluten in certain cereals.
Chronic malabsorption syndrome, linked to atrophy of the intestinal villi caused by the ingestion of a peptide, gliadin (a fraction of gluten). Gliadin acts as an antigen which combines with antibodies to form an immune complex capable of causing the aggregation of “killer” lymphocytes, which lead to the destruction of intestinal villi.
Soft, mucus-like, whitish stools (containing a certain amount of chyle), diarrhea, weight loss, growth arrest in children, intestinal bloating, edema, bone pain, cramps muscle problems, fatigue and anemia are among the symptoms that appear most frequently.
Celiac disease is also called “Gee’s disease”, “Herter’s disease”. The progression is chronic, with flare-ups, recovery is possible around 7-8 years, but leaves infantilism when the causes are not removed and if the genetic background is not corrected.
